How to Play Spellmaxxing

Spellmaxxing is a free online competitive spelling game. Players listen to a word spoken aloud, type the correct spelling, and earn points based on accuracy and speed. The game features solo practice, ranked matchmaking with MMR, real-time PvP battles, daily challenges, gauntlet survival mode, and private rooms for playing with friends.

Standard Mode

Ten words per round. Each word is played aloud and you type your answer before the timer runs out. In PvP, Standard uses a Best of 3 format — both players answer the same 10 words per round, and the player who wins 2 rounds takes the match. Points are awarded based on correctness, speed, and word difficulty.

Gauntlet Mode

An endless survival format. You start with 3 lives and face increasingly difficult words. Each incorrect answer costs a life. The game ends when all lives are lost. Your score is based on how many words you survive. In ranked Gauntlet, higher-rank players must survive more words to gain MMR.

BEEFR Mode

A real-time typing race between two players. Both players hear the same word simultaneously and race to spell it first. The first player to reach 10 correct answers wins. There is no timer per word — it is pure speed and accuracy.

Daily Challenge

Every day, a new set of 5 words is presented to all players worldwide. You have one attempt to spell all 5 words. Your score is ranked on a daily leaderboard. The challenge resets at midnight UTC. It is a great way to compare yourself against the global community.

Ranked System

The ranked system uses MMR (Matchmaking Rating) to track skill. After 5 placement matches, you are assigned a rank tier from Iron through Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, Diamond, Master, Grandmaster, Champion, and finally Immortal. Each tier has 3 divisions (III, II, I). Higher ranks face harder words in solo ranked and require more performance to climb. The system supports both Ranked Solo (Standard and Gauntlet) and Ranked PvP.

Difficulty Levels

Words are categorized into four difficulty tiers. Easy words (100 pts) are common everyday vocabulary. Medium words (200 pts) are less frequent and may have tricky patterns. Hard words (300 pts) are rare or have unusual letter combinations. Impossible words (500 pts) are the most obscure and challenging words available, designed for expert spellers. Impossible difficulty is available in Practice mode and Private Rooms.

Private Rooms

Create a private room and share the code with friends to play together. Private rooms support Standard, Gauntlet, and BEEFR formats with all difficulty levels including Impossible. The room creator can configure settings like word count and difficulty. Both logged-in users and guests can join.
